A long overdue re-issue of some of Manolo Sanlucar's early (not earliest) and arguably most influential recordings. The four LPs included in this package are Sanlucar, Sentimiento, Y Regresarte (a Miguel Hernandez), and Candela. Interestingly, Sanlucar has reservations about this period of his career, feeling in retrospect that his production style was overly guided by commercial pressures. But. These records contain some of his best compositions and guitar playing. And their late 70's esthetic, very progressive in just-after-Franco Spain, was as instrumental in reframing the Flamenco guitar for a modern audience as were Paco de Lucia's recordings of the period, and infinitely more daring. Sanlucar contains: Caballo Negro, Duelo de Guitarras, Dialogos, Raza, Colombianas de Bajo Guia, Caireles, Fantasmas de la Guerra, and Peineta Cubana. Sentimiento contains: Alfarero, Poema de la Solea, Canela y Clavo, A Mi Nino Isidro, Puerto Lucero, Cristina, Vicente y Manuela, and Guarija Merchelera. Y Regresarte (A Miguel Hernandez) contains: Jornaleros, Elegia, Aceituneros, Ruy-Senor y Mirlo (Cantaores a un Tiempo), El Hambre II, Elegia I (for Federico Garcia Lorca), Nanas de la Cebolla, Corrida Real, and Las Carceles. Candela contains: Candela, Como Un Trozo de Ti, Amanecer, Japon Siempre Japon, Callejon del Carmen, Oripando, Alba Rociera, Cuando Un Gitano Mira El Cielo (for Manuel Morao), Kato-San, and Solidaridad. Historically critical listening.
